About the song

“This Diamond Ring,” a timeless classic released in 1965, stands as a pinnacle of Gary Lewis & the Playboys’ career, marking their ascent to the top of the charts with infectious pop sensibilities. Written by Al Kooper, Bob Brass, and Irwin Levine, the song was initially demoed by Jimmy Radcliffe but gained fame through subsequent interpretations.

Gary Lewis & the Playboys’ rendition, released on Liberty Records, quickly climbed the Billboard Hot 100, eventually securing the number 1 spot on February 20, 1965. Produced by Snuff Garrett, the song featured prominent session musicians including the legendary drummer Hal Blaine, bassist Joe Osborn, and keyboardist Leon Russell, who also arranged the music. Despite rumors suggesting otherwise, Lewis has affirmed that the Playboys actively contributed to the recording, with additional support from Ron Hicklin’s vocal overdubs.

Al Kooper, although critical of the final production, envisioned “This Diamond Ring” tailored for a group like The Drifters, highlighting its potential for soulful interpretation. Nevertheless, Lewis & the Playboys’ rendition soared internationally, peaking at number 3 in Canada and number 6 in Australia, solidifying its status as a transcontinental hit.

Beyond its chart success, the song’s influence extended to diverse interpretations by other artists. Alvin and the Chipmunks included a playful rendition on their album “Chipmunks Ă  Go-Go,” while Billy Fury featured it on “14,” also known as The Lord’s Taverners Charity Album. Singer Wendy Hill even responded with “My Diamond Ring,” adding a unique twist to the song’s legacy.

“This Diamond Ring” remains a testament to Gary Lewis & the Playboys’ ability to craft memorable pop tunes that resonate across generations. With its catchy melody and universal theme of love and commitment, the song continues to captivate listeners, solidifying its place as a classic in the annals of pop music history.

Lyrics

Who wants to buy this diamond ring?
She took it off her finger, now it doesn’t mean a thing
This diamond ring doesn’t shine for me anymore
And this diamond ring doesn’t mean what it meant before
So if you’ve got someone whose love is true
Let it shine for you
This stone is genuine like love should be
And if your baby’s truer than my baby was to me
This diamond ring can mean something beautiful
And this diamond ring can mean dreams that are coming true
And then your heart won’t have to break like mine did
If there’s love behind it
This diamond ring can mean something beautiful
And this diamond ring can mean dreams that are coming true
And then your heart won’t have to break like mine did
If there’s love behind it
This diamond ring doesn’t shine for me anymore
And this diamond ring doesn’t mean what it meant before
So then your heart won’t have to break like mine did
If there’s love behind it
