About the song

“Unforgettable” is a timeless song penned by Irving Gordon, which first graced the music scene in 1951. Initially titled “Uncomparable,” the song’s title was changed to “Unforgettable” at the suggestion of the music publishing company, setting the stage for its future success.

The song is perhaps best known through the rendition by the legendary Nat King Cole, who recorded it in 1951. This version, from his 1952 album also titled “Unforgettable,” featured a lush arrangement by Nelson Riddle, a hallmark of Cole’s distinctive style. A notable feature of this recording is its enduring appeal, which has led to various adaptations over the years.

In 1952, Cole recorded a non-orchestrated version of the song, which was later included as one of the bonus tracks on the 1998 reissue of his 1955 instrumental album “Penthouse Serenade.” Then, on March 30, 1961, Cole revisited the song, recording it once again in a stereo version with Ralph Carmichael and his Orchestra for “The Nat King Cole Story” album.

The song experienced a resurgence in 1991 when Elvis Presley’s musical director, Joe Guercio, envisioned a new version featuring a duet between Nat King Cole and his daughter, Natalie Cole. This remixed duet, which retained much of the original charm while adding a modern touch, achieved significant success. It reached number 14 on the Hot 100 and number three on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. The 1991 version also earned three Grammy Awards in 1992, including Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Traditional Pop Vocal Performance.

Nat King Cole’s original 1951 recording was honored with induction into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2000, a testament to its lasting impact and the enduring legacy of Cole’s artistry.

Lyrics

Unforgettable that’s what you are
Unforgettable though near or far
Like a song of love that clings to me
How the thoughts of you goes things to me
Never before has someone been more
Unforgettable in every way
And forevermore (and forevermore)
That’s how you’ll stay (that’s how you’ll stay)
That’s why darling, it’s incredible
That someone so unforgettable
Thinks that I am unforgettable too
No, never before
Has someone been more
Ooh, unforgettable (unforgettable)
In every way (in every way)
And forevermore (and forevermore)
That’s how you’ll stay (that’s how you’ll stay)
That’s why darling, it’s incredible
That someone so unforgettable
Thinks that I am unforgettable too
