“Black Magic Woman” stands as a captivating example of musical transformation, originating from a composition by English guitarist Peter Green. Initially recorded by Fleetwood Mac in 1968, this song quickly became a notable piece in their repertoire, appearing on several of their albums including *English Rose*, *The Pious Bird of Good Omen*, and *Vintage Years*. However, it was not until Santana’s iconic rendition in 1970 that “Black Magic Woman” achieved global acclaim.

Peter Green’s original version of “Black Magic Woman” was inspired by Otis Rush’s song “All Your Love.” Despite its roots in blues and its distinctive mood, Fleetwood Mac’s recording only managed to reach number 37 on the UK Singles Chart. The track was rarely featured in live performances and was not a major hit for the band, particularly after Green’s departure from Fleetwood Mac in 1970. The song was occasionally performed by Danny Kirwan during this period.

The true breakthrough for “Black Magic Woman” came with Santana’s interpretation. Santana, led by guitarist Carlos Santana and featuring vocalist Gregg Rolie, reimagined the song by blending it with Latin rhythms and jazz influences. Their version, recorded for the album *Abraxas*, incorporated a lower key and introduced a fusion of blues, rock, jazz, and Latin music elements. Santana’s arrangement included the use of congas, timbales, and keyboard instruments, contributing to a unique and vibrant sound that distinguished it from the original Fleetwood Mac recording.

Released in 1970, Santana’s “Black Magic Woman” became a major hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in January 1971. The album *Abraxas* enjoyed immense success, topping charts worldwide and earning a 4x Platinum certification by 1986. Santana’s version of “Black Magic Woman” remains a definitive classic, celebrated for its rich blend of genres and its innovative approach to the original composition. The radio edit of the song runs for 3:15 minutes, while various recorded versions extend up to 8:56 minutes, showcasing the band’s impressive range and musicianship.

Lyrics

Got a black magic woman
Got a black magic woman
I got a black magic woman
Got me so blind I can’t see
That she’s a black magic woman
She’s tryin’ to make a devil out of me
Don’t turn your back on me, baby
Don’t turn your back on me, baby
Yes, don’t turn your back on me, baby
Stop messin’ around with your tricks
Don’t turn your back on me baby
You just might pick up my magic sticks
Got your spell on me, baby
Got your spell on me, baby
Yes, you got your spell on me, baby
Turning my heart into stone
I need you so bad magic woman
I can’t leave you alone
