About the song
“Walk Right Back” is a timeless classic from 1961, crafted by the talented Sonny Curtis and brought to life by The Everly Brothers. This song became a notable hit, climbing to No. 7 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart and reaching No. 1 on the UK Singles Chart for three weeks. Its catchy melody and heartfelt lyrics captured the hearts of many listeners across the globe.
The song’s journey from a B-side to a major hit is quite a story. Originally, “Walk Right Back” was meant to be the flip side of a record, but its popularity quickly turned it into the A-side. The creation of this memorable tune has an interesting backstory. Sonny Curtis, who was in the midst of basic training in California, wrote the song during a rare break. He had already come up with the guitar riff but needed to complete the lyrics.
Fortuitously, Curtis earned a three-day pass for being an expert marksman, which he used to visit Hollywood. There, he met Don and Phil Everly, who were taking acting classes. Impressed by Curtis’s song, the Everly Brothers decided to record it even though it only had one verse. They added their signature harmonies, making the song even more appealing.
When Curtis returned to his base, he quickly penned a second verse and sent it to the Everlys. However, by the time they received it, they had already recorded the song with just the initial verse. This version went on to become a major success.
Interestingly, other artists, including Perry Como and Andy Williams, recorded the song with the second verse included. However, the version with just the first verse proved to be the most enduring hit. Even when Anne Murray recorded it in 1978, she opted for the original single-verse arrangement, and it enjoyed renewed popularity.
“Walk Right Back” is not just a song; it’s a piece of musical history that showcases the charm of The Everly Brothers and the creative spirit of Sonny Curtis. Its blend of simple yet poignant lyrics and harmonious melodies continues to resonate with audiences, making it a cherished classic in the world of music.

Lyrics
I want you to tell me why you walked out on me
I’m so lonesome every day
I want you to know that since you walked out on me
Nothing seems to be the same old way
Think about the love that burns within my heart for you
The good times we had before you went away, oh please
Walk right back to me this minute
Bring your love to me, don’t send it
I’m so lonesome every day
I want you to tell me why you walked out on me
I’m so lonesome every day
I want you to know that since you walked out on me
Nothing seems to be the same old way
Think about the love that burns within my heart for you
The good times we had before you went away from me
Walk right back to me this minute
Bring your love to me, don’t send it
I’m so lonesome every day
I’m so lonesome every day
I’m so lonesome every day
