About the song

“She’s Got You” is a memorable country song that holds a special place in music history. Written by Hank Cochran and recorded by Patsy Cline, the song was released in 1962 and quickly became a major hit. Known for its upbeat jazz-pop style with country influences, it stands out as one of Cline’s most celebrated tracks.

The story behind “She’s Got You” is quite intriguing. According to the biography “Honky Tonk Angel: The Intimate Story of Patsy Cline” by Ellis Nassour, Cochran was so confident in the song’s success that he personally called Cline to share it with her. He visited her home with a bottle of liquor and played the song on his guitar for Cline and her friend Dottie West. Cline was deeply moved by the lyrics and loved the song so much that she learned it that very night. She even called her manager and producer to sing it to them over the phone. When it came time to record the song, both Cline and her producer, Owen Bradley, agreed it was a hit, which was a rare moment of consensus between them.

The song’s lyrics reflect on the theme of lost love through material possessions. It describes how the narrator still has the records they once shared with their former lover, but despite this, the lover is now with someone else. The poignant lines, “I’ve got the records … she’s got you,” capture the song’s emotional depth.

“She’s Got You” followed Cline’s previous hits “I Fall to Pieces” and “Crazy.” Released on January 30, 1962, it swiftly climbed to number one on the Hot C&W Sides country chart and reached number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also made it to number three on the Easy Listening chart and became Cline’s first hit in the United Kingdom, where it reached number 43. This success led to a memorable appearance on American Bandstand and eventually helped Cline secure her own Las Vegas show later that year.

The song was featured on Cline’s third studio album, “Sentimentally Yours,” which was released on August 6, 1962. “She’s Got You” remains a testament to Patsy Cline’s enduring talent and emotional resonance in country music.

Lyrics

I’ve got your picture
That you gave to me
And it’s signed with love
Just like it used to be
The only thing different
The only thing new
I’ve got your picture
She’s got you
I’ve got the records
That we used to share
And they still sound the same
As when you were here
The only thing different
The only thing new
I’ve got the records
She’s got you
I’ve got your memory
Or, has it got me
I really don’t know
But I know, it won’t let me be
I’ve got your class ring
That proved you cared
And it still looks the same
As when you gave it, dear
The only thing different
The only thing new
I’ve got these little things
She’s got you
I’ve got your memory
Or, has it got me
I really don’t know
But I know, it won’t let me be
I’ve got your class ring
That proved you cared
And it still looks the same
As when you gave it, dear
The only thing different
The only thing new
I’ve got these little things
She’s got you
