About  the song

“Hey, Good Lookin'” is a timeless country music classic written and recorded by the legendary Hank Williams in 1951. This iconic song has been inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001 and ranked No. 19 on CMT’s 100 Greatest Songs of Country Music in 2003. Since its original release, it has been covered by numerous artists, but Hank Williams’ version remains the most beloved and enduring.

Interestingly, the song’s lyrics were inspired by a 1942 Broadway musical tune of the same title by Cole Porter. However, Williams’ version takes a unique approach, using double entendres related to food preparation to express a romantic interest. As the song progresses, the singer promises exclusivity and commitment to his love interest.

The story behind the song is as fascinating as the song itself. Hank Williams wrote “Hey, Good Lookin'” in just 20 minutes while on a plane with his friend, musician Jimmy Dickens. Williams initially intended the song for Dickens but later decided to record it himself, jokingly telling Dickens that the song was too good for him.

The song was recorded on March 16, 1951, at Castle Studio in Nashville, with Williams backed by members of his Drifting Cowboys band. The single was released on June 22, 1951, and became an instant hit. One of the few existing film clips of Williams performing live is his appearance on the Kate Smith Evening Hour in 1952, where he performed “Hey, Good Lookin'” and “I Saw The Light.”

“Hey, Good Lookin'” is not only a testament to Hank Williams’ songwriting genius but also a reflection of his charismatic stage presence. This classic song continues to captivate audiences of all ages with its catchy melody, witty lyrics, and timeless charm.

Lyrics

Say, hey, good-looking
Whatcha got cooking?
How’s about cooking somethin’ up with me?
Hey, sweet baby
Don’t you think maybe
We could find us a brand-new recipe?
I got a hot-rod Ford and a two-dollar bill
And I know a spot right over the hill
There’s soda pop and the dancin’ is free
So if you wanna have fun come along with me, see?
Hey, good-looking
Whatcha got cooking?
How’s about cooking somethin’ up with me?
I’m free and ready
So we can go steady
How’s about saving all your time for me?
No more looking
I know I’ve been tooken
How’s about keeping steady company?
I’m gonna throw my date-book over the fence
And find me one for five or ten cents
I’ll keep it ’til it’s covered with age
‘Cause I’m writing your name down on every page
Say, hey good-looking
Whatcha got cooking?
How’s about cooking something up with me?
