About the song

“I Saw the Light” is a cherished country gospel song penned by the legendary Hank Williams. This deeply evocative tune was inspired by a personal moment in Williams’ life, illustrating his profound connection to his faith and his roots. The story behind the song’s creation is both simple and touching: Williams was returning from a concert with his mother, Lilly, when she pointed out the lights of Dannelly Field Airport as they neared Montgomery, Alabama. Her remark, “I just saw the light,” led Williams to write the song that would become a gospel classic.

Recorded during his debut session with MGM Records on April 21, 1947, “I Saw the Light” was initially released in September 1948. Despite a modest start and not achieving immediate commercial success, the song eventually became one of Williams’ most beloved tracks. It quickly gained popularity, becoming a staple in his live performances and a significant influence in the country gospel genre.

The song’s lyrics and melody reflect a deep spiritual yearning, echoing the themes found in biblical texts. Williams was inspired by Albert E. Brumley’s earlier song “He Set Me Free,” though “I Saw the Light” stood apart with its unique expression of redemption and hope. The composition uses biblical references from the Gospels and other scriptures to convey a heartfelt message of spiritual awakening.

Interestingly, Williams’ recording was not the first release of the song. Clyde Grubb recorded it first in August 1947, and his version was released by RCA Records before Williams’ version appeared. However, Williams’ rendition, accompanied by the track “Six More Miles (To the Graveyard),” eventually became the definitive version.

Hank Williams’ song has since been covered by numerous artists and has become a cornerstone of country gospel music. His original version, filled with his distinct vocal style and emotive delivery, continues to resonate with audiences, old and new, embodying the enduring power of country gospel music.

Lyrics

I wandered so aimless, life filled with sin
I wouldn’t let my dear savior in
Then Jesus came like a stranger in the night
Praise the Lord, I saw the light
I saw the light, I saw the light
No more darkness, no more night
Now I’m so happy no sorrow in sight
Praise the Lord, I saw the light
Just like a blind man, I wandered along
Worries and fears I claimed for my own
Then like the blind man that God gave back his sight
Praise the Lord, I saw the light
I saw the light, I saw the light
No more darkness, no more night
Now I’m so happy no sorrow in sight
Praise the Lord, I saw the light
I was a fool to wander and stray
For straight is the gate and narrows the way
Now I have traded the wrong for the right
Praise the Lord, I saw the light
I saw the light, I saw the light
No more darkness, no more night
Now I’m so happy no sorrow in sight
Praise the Lord, I saw the light
