About the song

“The Christmas Song,” often recognized by its opening line “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire,” is a cherished Christmas classic that first came to life in 1945. The song was penned by Robert Wells and Mel TormĂ©, who crafted a tune that has since become synonymous with the holiday season.

The Nat King Cole Trio made the initial recording of the song in June 1946. Despite initial resistance from Capitol Records, Cole, a respected artist known for his smooth voice, was adamant about a second recording. In August of the same year, he recorded a new version featuring a small string section, which proved to be a commercial success, topping both pop and R&B charts.

Nat King Cole’s dedication to the song didn’t end there. He revisited it in 1953 with a full orchestral arrangement by Nelson Riddle, and again in 1961 with a stereophonic version, orchestrated by Ralph Carmichael. The 1961 recording is particularly revered, widely seen as the definitive version of the song. This recording not only captivated audiences but also earned a special place in music history; in 2004, it was the most-loved Christmas song among women aged 30–49. Furthermore, in 2022, the Library of Congress honored the 1961 recording by preserving it in the United States National Recording Registry, recognizing its cultural and historical significance.

The original 1946 recording of “The Christmas Song” also received acclaim and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1974, underscoring its enduring impact. Through its various renditions, the song continues to be a beloved part of holiday celebrations, reflecting the warmth and joy of the Christmas season.

Lyrics

Chestnuts roasting on an open fire
Jack Frost nipping at your nose
Yule-tide carols being sung by a choir
Folks dressed up like Eskimos
Everybody knows a turkey and some mistletoe
Helps to make the season bright
Tiny tots with their eyes all aglow
Will find it hard to sleep tonight
They know that Santa’s on his way
He’s loaded lots of toys and goodies on his sleigh
And every mother’s child is gonna spy
To see if reindeer really know how to fly
And so I’m offering this simple phrase
To kids from one to ninety-two
Although it’s been said many times, many ways
Merry Christmas to you
And so I’m offering this simple phrase
To kids from one to ninety-two
Although it’s been said many times, many ways
Merry Christmas, have a Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas to you
