About the song

Released on August 7, 1969, **”Green River”** marks the third studio album from the iconic American rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival. This album arrived in the midst of a prolific year for the band, sandwiched between the release of their earlier album *Bayou Country* in January and the subsequent *Willy and the Poor Boys* in November. Creedence Clearwater Revival, often abbreviated as CCR, was riding a wave of success with their earlier releases, particularly with the breakout single “Proud Mary.”

In a year that saw them producing three albums, CCR showcased their unique brand of rock music, a stark contrast to the acid rock and psychedelic jams prevalent in San Francisco at the time. Led by the formidable John Fogerty, the band adhered to a disciplined approach, opting for tightly structured songs over the meandering solos favored by many of their contemporaries. Fogerty, the primary songwriter and producer, believed in getting straight to the point with his music, a philosophy that significantly influenced the sound of *Green River*.

The album features some of CCR’s most memorable tracks, including the enduring hits “Bad Moon Rising” and “Green River.” Both tracks soared to No. 2 on the U.S. charts, with “Lodi” and “Commotion” also making notable appearances. “Bad Moon Rising” stands out for its contrast between upbeat, infectious music and its darker lyrical content, inspired by a scene from the 1941 film *The Devil and Daniel Webster* that evokes apocalyptic imagery.

The title track, “Green River,” holds personal significance for Fogerty. He describes the song as a nostalgic ode to his childhood visits to a picturesque spot on Putah Creek near Winters, California. These visits were marked by joyous memories, including learning to swim and enjoying the natural beauty of the area. The name “Green River” itself was inspired by a lime-flavored soda syrup from his youth, which adds a layer of personal touch and authenticity to the track.

In essence, *Green River* encapsulates the essence of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s sound—an authentic blend of rockabilly and roots music, meticulously crafted and deeply rooted in personal experience.

Lyrics

Well, take me back down where cool water flow, y’all
Let me remember things I love, Lord
Stoppin’ at the log where catfish bite
Walkin’ along the river road at night
Barefoot girls dancin’ in the moonlight

I can hear the bullfrog callin’ me, aw
Wonder if my rope’s still hangin’ to the tree, aw
Love to kick my feet way down the shallow water
Shoofly, dragonfly, get back to mother
Pick up a flat rock, skip it across Green River
Well!

Up at Cody’s camp I spent my days, Lord
With flat car riders and cross-tie walkers
Old Cody Junior took me over
Said, “You’re gonna find the world is smoulderin’
And if you get lost come on home to Green River.”

Well!
Come on home
