About the song

“What You Won’t Do for Love” is a timeless classic by American singer-songwriter Bobby Caldwell, released in September 1978 as the lead single from his self-titled debut album. This song, penned by Caldwell alongside Alfons Kettner and produced by Ann Holloway, not only marked the beginning of Caldwell’s career but also established him as a distinctive voice in the music industry. The track’s sultry melody and smooth vocals have ensured its enduring appeal, making it a beloved piece in both soul and pop music.

Caldwell’s journey to this breakout single was paved by his reputation as a talented musician in Miami’s vibrant club scene. His prowess caught the attention of TK Records president Henry Stone, who signed Caldwell to an exclusive contract in 1978. Initially, Caldwell’s debut album required some reworking; Stone believed it needed a hit to truly make an impact. Caldwell returned to the studio and delivered “What You Won’t Do for Love,” which became the album’s standout track. The song’s memorable horn arrangement was crafted by Miami arranger Mike Lewis, adding a rich layer to its soulful sound.

Despite Caldwell’s initial preference for another track, “My Flame,” as the album’s lead single, TK Records had confidence in “What You Won’t Do for Love” as the hit. The song was strategically released to R&B radio with a discreet approach to Caldwell’s racial identity, aiming to connect with a broad audience. This strategy proved successful as the song gained substantial popularity, eventually reaching number nine on the US Billboard Hot 100 and making a significant impact on the R&B and Easy Listening charts.

The song’s unique appeal was further highlighted by a heart-shaped pressing released as a promotional item, which became a collector’s item due to its high retail price and limited availability. The heart-shaped single, initially a promotional gimmick, proved so popular that 50,000 copies were pressed for Valentine’s Day 1979.

Following Caldwell’s passing on March 14, 2023, “What You Won’t Do for Love” experienced a resurgence in popularity, with the song recharting in the UK at number 86 on the Singles Downloads Chart Top 100. This resurgence speaks to the song’s lasting influence and Caldwell’s enduring legacy. The track remains a quintessential example of soulful artistry, resonating with audiences across generations.

Lyrics

I guess you wonder where I’ve been
I searched to find the love within
I came back to ley you know
Got a thing for you
And I can’t let go
My friends wonder what is wrong with me
Well I’m in a daze from your love you see
I came back to let you know
Got a thing for you
And I can’t let go
Some people go around the world for love
And they may never find what they dream of
What you won’t do, do for love
You tried everthing
But you don’t give up
In my world only you
Make me do for love
What I would not do
My friends wonder what is wrong with me
Well I’m in a daze from your love you see
I came back to let you know
Got a thing for you
And I can’t let go
And though I only want the best it’s true
I can’t believe the things I do for you
What you won’t do, do for love
You’ve tried everything
But you won’t give up
In my world only you
Make me do for love
What I would not do
