About the song

“Only You (And You Alone)”—often simply known as “Only You”—is a timeless pop classic composed by Buck Ram that has captivated audiences since its debut. Originally recorded by The Platters with Tony Williams as the lead vocalist in 1955, this song has left an indelible mark on music history.

The Platters’ journey with “Only You” began in 1954 when they first recorded the song for Federal Records. However, this initial version went unreleased. The band, then under the Mercury Records label, re-recorded the track on April 26, 1955, and this time, it resonated deeply with listeners. Released in May of that year, this version of “Only You” quickly became a major hit, dominating the U.S. R&B charts for seven consecutive weeks and achieving a remarkable number five on the Billboard Top 100. Its enduring appeal is evident from its 30-week chart run, outpacing a rival cover version by The Hilltoppers.

The success of “Only You” was not without its trials. Platters bass singer Herb Reed recounted the band’s struggle to perfect the song. A serendipitous moment during a car rehearsal, where Tony Williams’ voice broke unexpectedly, led to a breakthrough. This spontaneous, raw moment became the hallmark of their successful version. Buck Ram, who played piano on this recording, noted that Tony Williams’ distinctive voice break was an intentional choice, adding to the song’s unique charm.

The Platters’ rendition of “Only You” also featured on the B-side of “The Great Pretender” when it was released in the UK, serving as Europe’s first introduction to the iconic group. Both songs were performed in the 1956 film “Rock Around the Clock,” further cementing their place in pop culture.

In 1966, The Platters revisited “Only You” with a slightly longer version for Musicor Records, featured on the album “I Love You 1,000 Times.” The original 1955 recording was later inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999, underscoring its lasting impact and significance in the world of music.

Lyrics

Only you can make all this world seem right
Only you can make the darkness bright
Only you and you alone can thrill me like you do
And fill my heart with love for only you
Oh, only you can do make all this change in me
For it’s true, you are my destiny
When you hold my hand I understand the magic that you do
You’re my dream come true, my one and only you
Oh oh, only you can do make this change in me
For it’s true, you are my destiny
When you hold my hand I understand the magic that you do
You’re my dream come true, my one and only you
