## Doo-Wop Harmony and a One-Hit Wonder: The Story of The Mello-Kings

The Mello-Kings weren’t your typical pop stars. Emerging from the vibrant doo-wop scene of the late 1950s, this American group carved their niche with tight harmonies and a song that continues to resonate today. Their story is a testament to the enduring power of music and the dedication of those who keep its flame alive.

Formed in 1956 at a high school in Mount Vernon, New York, The Mello-Kings originally called themselves The Mellotones. The quintet, consisting of brothers Jerry and Bob Scholl, Eddie Quinn, Neil Arena, and Larry Esposito, found guidance under manager Dick Levister. Signed to the Herald label, they were ready to make their mark.

Their defining moment came with the release of “Tonite, Tonite” in 1957. Written by Billy Myles, the song became a national hit, staying on the US pop charts for over ten weeks. However, success brought a twist. Another group had already claimed the “Mellotones” name, forcing them to adopt the now-iconic “Mello-Kings” moniker.

While “Tonite, Tonite” remained their signature song, The Mello-Kings didn’t stop there. They released singles like “The Chapel on the Hill”, “Baby Tell Me Why Why Why”, and the regional hit “Valerie”. Their talent even landed them a spot in the 1959 film “Sweet Beat”.

The group faced challenges along the way. In 1975, tragedy struck when lead singer Bob Scholl died in a boating accident. Despite the loss, Jerry Scholl, the group’s heart and soul, persevered. They continued performing, later adding Anthony Pinto to become a quintet once again. They graced revival shows in the late 60s and 70s, keeping the doo-wop spirit alive.

The Mello-Kings’ legacy extends beyond the original members. Founding member Jerry Scholl partnered with former member Mick Mansueto to carry the torch. Even after Jerry’s passing in 2019, Mick, honoring his friend’s wishes, continues performing under the name “Jerry Scholl presents The Mello-Kings”. They entertain audiences at casinos, performing arts centers, and festivals.

The story of The Mello-Kings transcends a single hit. It’s a testament to the power of friendship, perseverance, and the enduring magic of doo-wop harmonies. Their music continues to bring joy to audiences of all generations, ensuring that “Tonite, Tonite” remains a timeless classic.

Lyrics

Too-oo-oo-night, tonite while I’m holding you so near (holding you so near)
Tonite, tonite what I’d give if I could hear
Those three little words that would thrill the heart of me (thrill the heart of me)
Just whisper (shhh whisper) “I love you” and will eternally
Tonite, tonite more than any time before (any time before)
This hea-ah-art of mine seems to need you so much more
The touch of your lips, the thrill of your embrace (thrill of your embrace)
Keep saying that no one will ever take your place
While looking up above I-I wished upon a star
And prayed for a blessing from ab-o-o-o-ove
Well, if my wish should come true until our life is through
I’ll have you near to have, to hold and to love
Well, tonite, tonite may it never reach an end (never reach an end)
I’ll mi-i-iss you so till you’re in my arms again
With all of my heart I declare with all my might (declare with all my might)
I’ll love you forever as I lo-o-o-ve you tonite
Too-oo-oo-night, tonite may it never reach an end (never reach an end)
I’ll mi-i-iss you so till you’re in my arms again
With all of my heart I declare with all my might (declare with all my might)
I’ll love you forever as I lo-o-o-ve you-oo to-oo-ni-ite
(Love you tonite)
