About the song

“Midnight Confessions” is a timeless song that has captured the hearts of music lovers for generations. Written by Lou T. Josie and originally performed by the Ever-Green Blues, this soulful ballad has undergone a transformation over the years, with American rock band The Grass Roots giving it a new life in 1968. Although it was never included on any of the band’s studio albums, “Midnight Confessions” has since become a staple on their compilation albums, including Golden Grass.

The song’s success can be attributed to its relatable lyrics, which tell the story of a man who is deeply in love with a married woman. Despite knowing that his feelings will never be reciprocated, he finds solace in confessing his love to her, albeit in the dead of night. The song’s haunting melody and poignant lyrics have resonated with listeners across the globe, making it one of The Grass Roots’ most beloved hits.

The song’s origins date back to the Evergreen Blues Band, whose manager, Lou Josie, penned the lyrics. The original demo featured a horn section, which caught the attention of record producer and engineer Steve Barri. Barri was looking to create a “West Coast” version of a Motown-style production, and he saw potential in “Midnight Confessions.” The Grass Roots’ version of the song was produced and engineered by Barri, with the horn section arrangement courtesy of Jimmie Haskell. The instrumentation was recorded by the legendary LA studio musicians known as The Wrecking Crew, who were responsible for many of the band’s hits.

The song’s lead vocals were shared by Rob Grill and Warren Entner, with Grill handling the verses and Entner taking the choruses. The result was a masterclass in harmonies, with the two vocalists blending their voices in perfect harmony. “Midnight Confessions” went on to become The Grass Roots’ biggest charting hit on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching the Top 5 on both the U.S. and Canadian pop singles charts. Today, the song remains a fan favorite, a testament to the enduring power of music to capture our emotions and connect us with one another.

Lyrics

The sound of your footsteps
Tell me that you’re near
Your soft gentle motion, babe
Brings out a need in me that nobody hears, except
In my midnight confessions
When I tell all the world that I love you
In my midnight confessions
When I say all the things that I want to
I love you
There’s a little gold ring you wear on your hand
Makes me understand
There’s another before me, you’ll never be mine
I’m wastin’ my time
Staggering through the daytime
Your image on my mind
I’m passing so close beside you, baby
‘Cause sometimes the feelings are so hard to hide, but
In my midnight confessions
When I tell all the world that I love you
In my midnight confessions
When I say all the things that I want to
I love you
There’s a little gold ring you wear on your hand
Makes me understand
There’s another before me, you’ll never be mine
I’m wastin’ my time
In my midnight confession
When I tell all the world that I love you
In my midnight confessions
When I say all the things that I want to
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
Na, na, na, na, na, na, na, na
