Quick, who was a bass vocalist with the American doo-wop group The Del-Vikings. The version that most people remember, however, was released in January 1957 and led by Gus Backus. Due to its popularity, Joe Averbach of Fee Bee Records, who was struggling to keep up with the demand, transferred the song to Dot Records later that month.
