About the song

“Sleep Walk” stands as a timeless instrumental masterpiece that emerged from the musical talent of Santo & Johnny Farina, accompanied by their uncle Mike Dee on drums. Released in 1959, this soulful composition showcases the evocative tones of the steel guitar, creating a hauntingly beautiful melody that captivated audiences worldwide.

The story behind “Sleep Walk” begins with Santo and Johnny Farina, whose early musical training under their father Tony included learning the steel guitar and composing their own music. Their creative journey was nurtured by a Webcor tape recorder, a tool that would capture the initial harmonies of what would later become their iconic track.

Legend has it that the inspiration for “Sleep Walk” struck Johnny Farina during a sleepless night after a performance. Unable to quiet his mind, he and Santo embarked on an impromptu recording session, layering harmonies and refining melodies until they crafted what Johnny believed to be a potential hit song. The dedication to their craft was evident as Johnny spent over a year negotiating with music publishers to bring “Sleep Walk” to professional recording studios.

Their persistence paid off when the demo of “Sleep Walk” caught the attention of Ed Burton from Trinity Music, leading to a recording contract with Canadian-American Records. Armed with a triple-neck Fender Stringmaster steel guitar, the Farina brothers recorded the track at Trinity Music studios in Manhattan, New York City.

Upon its release, “Sleep Walk” swiftly ascended the Billboard Hot 100 charts, making its mark on August 17, 1959, and eventually reaching the coveted number 1 spot for the last two weeks of September that year. Its appeal was undeniable, resonating not only with mainstream audiences but also making a notable impact on the R&B charts where it peaked at number 4. The song’s success extended internationally, achieving a notable position in Canada’s CHUM charts and reaching number 22 in the UK.

Beyond its chart-topping achievements, “Sleep Walk” holds the distinction of being the final instrumental track to top the charts in the 1950s. Its enduring popularity earned Santo & Johnny Farina a gold record, cementing their place in music history.

Today, “Sleep Walk” remains a cherished piece of instrumental music, celebrated for its melodic richness and emotional depth. Its legacy continues to inspire musicians and listeners alike, a testament to the Farina brothers’ timeless contribution to the world of rock and roll.

Lyrics

Instead of dreaming
I Sleepwalk
Cause I lost you
And now what am I to do
What to do.
Can’t believe that we’re through
I don’t care how much you tell me
Sleep talk
Cause I miss you
While the memory of you
Lingers like a song
Darling, I was so wrong
But I’ll be right some day
The night fills my lonely place
I see your face
I know, I miss you so
I still love you
And it drives me insane
Sleepwalk
Every night I just Sleepwalk
And when you walk inside the door
I will Sleepwalk no more
Sleepwalk
Every night I just Sleepwalk
And when you walk inside the door
I will Sleepwalk no more
I will Sleepwalk no more
I will Sleepwalk no more
