About the song

“The Things We Do for Love” is a timeless classic from the British band 10cc, released as a single in 1976. This iconic song later featured on their album Deceptive Bends, which was released in 1977. Notably, this was the group’s first release after the departure of two original band members, Kevin Godley and Lol Creme.

Interestingly, the song’s origins date back to the How Dare You! sessions, although it didn’t quite resonate with Godley and Creme at the time. Eric Stewart, a band member, recalled that Kevin Godley had expressed his dissatisfaction with the song, stating that he didn’t want to create “any more crap like this” after hearing it.

Despite the initial reservations, “The Things We Do for Love” went on to receive widespread acclaim. Record World praised it as a “well-crafted tune with a crisp, pop sound”, while Cash Box described it as a “pop record that combines the best of a strong Beatles influence with solid rock ‘n’ roll and the luxuriant harmonies that characterized [10cc’s] past efforts”. This song’s enduring appeal lies in its masterful blend of catchy melodies, rich harmonies, and a nostalgic nod to the Beatles’ influence.

Lyrics

Too many broken hearts have fallen in the river
Too many lonely souls have drifted out to sea
You lay your bets and then you pay the price
The things we do for love, the things we do for love
Communication is the problem to the answer
You’ve got her number and your hand is on the phone
The weather’s turned and all the lines are down
The things we do for love, the things we do for love
Like walking in the rain and the snow
When there’s nowhere to go
And you’re feelin’ like a part of you is dying
And you’re looking for the answer in her eyes
You think you’re gonna break up
Then she says she wants to make up
Ooh you made me love you
Ooh you’ve got a way
Ooh you had me crawling up the wall
Like walking in the rain and the snow
When there’s nowhere to go
And you’re feelin’ like a part of you is dying
And you’re looking for the answer in her eyes
You think you’re gonna break up
Then she says she wants to make up
Ooh you made me love you
Ooh you’ve got a way
Ooh you had me crawling up the wall
A compromise would surely help the situation
Agree to disagree but disagree to part
When after all it’s just a compromise of
The things we do for love, the things we do for love
