Written by Peter Cetera and David Foster, the song became a standout track on Chicago’s fourteenth studio album, *Chicago 17*, released in 1984. Peter Cetera, the band’s lead vocalist at the time, delivered an emotional performance that resonated deeply with listeners.
Released as the album’s third single, “You’re the Inspiration” achieved notable success. In January 1985, it climbed to No. 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart and reached the top spot on the Adult Contemporary chart. The song’s popularity did not go unnoticed, earning Peter Cetera and David Foster accolades from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) in 1986 for being among the most-performed songs.
The song’s origins are quite fascinating. Peter Cetera revealed in a 2004 interview that “You’re the Inspiration” was initially intended for country singer Kenny Rogers. David Foster, who was working with Rogers at the time, asked Cetera to write a song for him. Cetera, who was preparing for a trip to Italy, agreed to help but needed to complete the song quickly. With Foster’s assistance, they managed to create the song’s basic structure in just a few hours. Cetera then refined the lyrics and melody while in Italy, drawing inspiration from his surroundings. Interestingly, Kenny Rogers decided not to record the song, which turned out to be a fortunate twist for Cetera and Chicago.
In 1997, Cetera re-recorded “You’re the Inspiration” for his solo album, *You’re the Inspiration: A Collection*. He also collaborated with the R&B group Az Yet on a single version that year. The song’s timeless appeal was further highlighted when it was featured in the 2016 film *Deadpool*.
