About the song

“Night Fever” is a celebrated song by the Bee Gees, known for its infectious rhythm and significant role in the 1977 film *Saturday Night Fever*. Released on the RSO Records label, this track marked a notable point in the Bee Gees’ career, following their previous hits from the same soundtrack, “How Deep is Your Love” and “Stayin’ Alive.”

The journey of “Night Fever” began when Robert Stigwood, the producer of *Saturday Night Fever*, initially wanted to name the film *Saturday Night*. However, Bee Gees member Robin Gibb expressed concerns about this title. Stigwood was drawn to the title “Night Fever,” though he was cautious about using it for the film’s title. Eventually, the Bee Gees persuaded him to adopt “Night Fever” as the film’s name, and the song became an iconic part of the soundtrack.

Upon its release, “Night Fever” quickly made a splash on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. It debuted at number 76 but soon soared to number 1, where it remained for eight weeks—making it the longest-running number one single of that year. The song was so popular that, during its peak, it was often seen alongside “Stayin’ Alive” in the top ranks, showcasing the Bee Gees’ incredible success during this period. Remarkably, the Bee Gees’ songs even occupied five of the top positions on the Hot 100 chart in one week, with “Night Fever” leading the pack.

The creation of “Night Fever” was inspired by a string intro reminiscent of Percy Faith’s “Theme from A Summer Place.” The song’s development involved Barry Gibb, Robin Gibb, and Maurice Gibb crafting the lyrics while sitting on a staircase—a setting reminiscent of their early songwriting days.

Recorded in France over several months, “Night Fever” was finalized in September 1977. The song’s energetic vibe and memorable melody made it a defining track of the disco era, cementing the Bee Gees’ place in music history. The B-side of the single featured a live version of “Down the Road” from their 1977 album *Here at Last… Bee Gees… Live*.

“Night Fever” remains a testament to the Bee Gees’ talent and their ability to capture the spirit of the disco age. Its impact on music and pop culture continues to be celebrated today.

Lyrics

Listen to the ground
There is movement all around
There is something goin’ down
And I can feel it
On the waves of the air
There is dancin’ out there
It’s somethin’ we can’t share
We can’t steal it
That sweet city woman
She moved through the light
Controlling my mind and my soul
When you reach out for me, yeah
And the feelin’ is right
Then I get night fever, night fever
We know how to do it
Gimme that night fever, night fever
We know how to show it
Here I am
Prayin’ for this moment to last
Livin’ on the music so fine
Borne on the wind
Makin’ it mine
Night fever, night fever
We know how to do it
Gimme that night fever, night fever
We know how to show it
In the heat of our love
Don’t need no help for us to make it
Gimme just enough
To take us to the mornin’
I got fire in my mind
I get higher in my walkin’
And I’m glowin’ in the dark
Give you warnin’
Sweet city woman
She moves through the light
Controlling my mind and my soul
When you reach out for me
And the feelin’ is right
Night fever, night fever
We know how to do it
Gimme that night fever, night fever
We know how to show it
Here I am
Prayin’ for this moment to last
Livin’ on the music so fine
Borne on the wind
Makin’ it mine
Night fever, night fever
We know how to do it
Gimme that night fever, night fever
We know how to show it
Gimme that night fever, night fever
We know how to do it
Gimme that night fever, night fever
We know how to show it
Gimme that night fever, night fever
We know how to do it
