About the song

“Born Free” is a timeless and iconic song with music composed by John Barry and lyrics penned by Don Black. This memorable tune was created for the 1966 film of the same name and earned an Academy Award for Best Original Song. Its significance and enduring appeal have made it a beloved classic.

The song’s journey began when its creators, Barry and Black, chose the British singer Matt Monro to record it for the film. Monro was managed by Black, and his smooth, heartfelt voice was seen as the perfect match for the song. Initially, the film’s producers felt the song was not commercially viable and decided to remove it from the film’s Royal Command premiere in London. However, Monro, who was present at the event, and Black managed to convince the producers to reinstate it. The song was ultimately included in the closing credits of the film in a shortened version, which allowed it to qualify for the prestigious Academy Award. Monro’s full version was later released on the film’s soundtrack album and became a defining piece of his career.

Despite Matt Monro’s version not achieving chart success, “Born Free” saw various interpretations that gained popularity. Roger Williams, an accomplished musician, recorded a notable cover featuring a male chorus, which helped the song climb to number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 and secure the top spot on the Adult Contemporary chart for six weeks in late 1966. In 1968, the R&B group the Hesitations released their own version, which reached number 38 on the Hot 100. Additionally, in 1991, Vic Reeves released a version of “Born Free” on his album *I Will Cure You*, which peaked at number six on the UK Singles Chart.

“Born Free” remains a powerful and inspiring anthem, celebrated for its uplifting message and memorable melody.

Lyrics

Born free
As free as the wind blows
As free as the grass grows
Born free to follow your heart
Live free
And beauty surrounds you
The world still astounds you
Each time you look at a star
Stay free
Where no walls divide you
You’re free as a roaring tide so there’s no need to hide
Born free
And life is worth living
But only worth living
‘Cause you’re born free
Stay free
Where no walls divide you
You’re free as a roaring tide so there’s no need to hide
Born free
And life is worth living
But only worth living
‘Cause you’re born free
