About the song

“And I Love You So” by Perry Como is indeed a notable album in his discography, released in 1973 by RCA Records. The title track, originally written by Don McLean, became a surprise hit single for Como, reaching the top 40 on the national charts and number one on the Easy Listening chart.

Interestingly, Perry Como’s rendition of “And I Love You So” was so successful that RCA Records requested him to record a Spanish version of the song. Despite Como not speaking Spanish initially, he received personal Spanish lessons from the head of RCA International to ensure the record could be made.

The album also featured covers of songs by contemporary artists of that time, including Roberta Flack, The Carpenters, Ray Price, Tony Orlando and Dawn, Bread, and Mac Davis. Chet Atkins, a prominent figure at RCA’s Nashville studios, was involved in producing the album, marking one of his last productions before stepping down from his executive position.

Overall, “And I Love You So” stands out not only for its musical content but also for its success in bringing Perry Como back into the limelight with a memorable hit single.

Lyrics

And I love you so
The people ask me how
How I’ve lived till now
I tell them I don’t know
I guess they understand
How lonely life has been
But life began again
The day you took my hand
And yes, I know how lonely life can be
The shadows follow me ‘n’ the night won’t set me free
But I don’t let the evening get me down
Now that you’re around me
And you love me, too
Your thoughts are just for me
You set my spirit free
I’m happy that you do
The book of life is brief
And once a page is read
All but life is dead
That is my belief
And yes, I know how lonely life can be
The shadows follow me and the night won’t set me free
But I don’t let the evening get me down
Now that you’re around me
