About the song

“Wasted Days and Wasted Nights” is a classic American song recorded by Freddy Fender that has left a lasting impact on both country and pop music. Originally released in 1959, this song showcases Fender’s blend of rockabilly and Tejano influences, a unique sound that became a hallmark of his career. At that time, Fender was refining his musical style, but his career faced a setback when he was arrested and convicted of marijuana possession in 1960.

Despite this early obstacle, Fender’s song gained renewed popularity years later. In August 1971, the Texas-based band, Sir Douglas Quintet, released their own version of “Wasted Days and Wasted Nights,” paying tribute to Fender’s original work. Fender’s friend, Doug Sahm from the band, played a significant role in this re-recording.

Fender’s career saw a major revival in 1975 with the success of his hit “Before the Next Teardrop Falls.” With the support of producer Huey P. Meaux, Fender re-recorded “Wasted Days and Wasted Nights,” which then became a major hit. This version climbed to the top of the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart and also made a notable impact on the Billboard Hot 100 and Easy Listening charts.

The song’s popularity extended beyond the U.S., achieving remarkable success in New Zealand, where it topped the charts for twelve weeks in 1975, marking it as one of the longest-running number-one singles of that era.

Fender revisited the song in the 1980s, adding synthesizers and a gated snare drum for a fresh sound. He also recorded it again in the early 1990s with the Texas Tornados, and this version was featured on the soundtrack of the 1993 film “The Beverly Hillbillies.”

“Wasted Days and Wasted Nights” has been featured in various films and TV shows, including “W” and “Fire in the Sky.” Its enduring legacy was recognized in 2012 when it was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, solidifying its place in music history.

Lyrics

Wasted days and wasted nights
I have left for you behind
For you don’t belong to me
You heart belongs to someone else
Why should I keep loving you
When I know that you’re not true
And why should I call your name
When you’re to blame for making me blue
Don’t you remember the day
That you went away and left me
I was so lonely
Prayed for you only, my love
Why should I keep loving you
When I know that you’re not true
And why should I call your name
When you’re to blame for making me blue
