About the song

In the lighthearted and entertaining 1965 American comedy film, “The Monkey’s Uncle,” we are introduced to the charming and ingenious college student, Merlin Jones, played by Tommy Kirk, and his lovely girlfriend, Jennifer, portrayed by Annette Funicello, a former Mouseketeer from The Mickey Mouse Club. The film is a sequel to the 1964 hit, “The Misadventures of Merlin Jones,” and promises to deliver a delightful blend of humor, adventure, and romance.

The story begins with a unique twist, as Merlin Jones legally adopts his chimpanzee, Stanley, in a court of law. This unusual arrangement is the result of an experiment to raise Stanley as a human, and the title “The Monkey’s Uncle” cleverly plays on the idiom, referencing the chimpanzee’s connection to Merlin.

As the plot unfolds, we find Merlin and his friends at Midvale College, where a wealthy benefactor, Mr. Astorbilt, has offered a substantial donation to the school, but with a peculiar condition. He challenges the students to build a man-powered flying machine, and if they succeed, the donation will be theirs. If not, it will go to a rival school. Merlin, being the inventive genius that he is, takes on the challenge and designs a lightweight airplane powered by a propeller driven by bicycle pedals.

However, Merlin soon realizes that even his athletic friends won’t have the strength to power the plane, so he develops a strength elixir based on adrenaline. To gain the support of his friends, he creates a “honest way to cheat” by adapting the recently discovered sleep-learning method. This clever trick allows his friends to pass a difficult history course while they sleep, with the help of Merlin’s girlfriend, Jennifer, reading their lessons to them.

As the story progresses, we see Merlin’s friends, now empowered by the strength elixir, successfully build and fly the man-powered airplane, winning the contest and securing the donation for Midvale College. But, in a surprising twist, the “wealthy donor” is revealed to be a mental patient who has escaped from the local hospital, and the film ends with him fleeing from the authorities.

“The Monkey’s Uncle” is a delightful and entertaining film that combines humor, adventure, and romance, making it a must-watch for fans of classic American comedies. With its lighthearted tone and engaging storyline, this film is sure to bring a smile to the faces of audiences of all ages.

Lyrics

Uh, huh, She loves the monkey’s uncle,
Yeah, yeah, She loves the monkey’s uncle,
Whoa, whoa, She loves the monkey’s uncle,
And the monkey’s uncle’s ape for me!
I don’t care what the whole world thinks!
She loves the monkey’s uncle!
Call us a couple of “missing links”,
She loves the monkey’s uncle!
Love all these monkeyshines,
Every day is Valentine’s,
I love the monkey’s uncle,
And the monkey’s uncle’s ape for me!
Ape for me!
Uh, huh, She loves the monkey’s uncle,
Yeah, yeah, She loves the monkey’s uncle,
Whoa, whoa, She loves the monkey’s uncle,
And the monkey’s uncle’s ape for me!
This in my heart jumps like a clown
She loves the monkey’s uncle!
Feels like the circus just came to town!
She loves the monkey’s uncle!
I live in a “jungle gym”,
In order to be with him
I love the monkey’s uncle,
And I wish I were the monkey’s aunt!
Monkey’s aunt!
Whoa whoa whoa whoa whoa
On the day he marries me
What a nutty family tree!
A bride!
A groom!
A chimpanzee!
Let them say he’s the booby prize!
She loves the monkey’s uncle!
He is the guy I idolize!
She loves the monkey’s uncle!
Love all those monkeyshines,
Every day is Valentine’s,
I love the monkey’s uncle,
And the monkey’s uncle’s ape for me!
Ape for me!
Uh, huh, She (I) loves (love) the monkey’s uncle,
Yeah, yeah, She (I) loves (love) the monkey’s uncle,
Whoa, whoa, She (I) loves (love) the monkey’s uncle,
And I’m MAD about his chimpanzee!
