About the song

“Send Me a Postcard” is a timeless track that first captivated audiences with its release by the Dutch band Shocking Blue in 1968. Written by the talented Robbie van Leeuwen, the song is a blend of rock and psychedelic influences, characterized by its catchy melody and evocative lyrics. Originally performed in English, it set the stage for a global journey through various languages and interpretations.

In 1980, the song saw a new life with Swedish lyrics penned by Per Gessle, as it was recorded by Gyllene Tider under the title “Skicka ett vykort, älskling.” This version brought a fresh cultural twist to the song, resonating with a new audience while retaining the essence of the original. Similarly, the song was embraced in Finland with a Finnish rendition titled “Kirjoita postikorttiin,” recorded by Muska as her debut single in 1971. This version marked a significant milestone in Muska’s career, establishing her presence in the music scene.

Adding to the song’s international appeal, a Turkish version, “Aşk Çiçeği” or “Flower of Love,” was brought to life by the band Mavi Işıklar in 1971. This adaptation underscored the song’s universal themes of longing and affection, reaching listeners across different cultures and languages.

Despite its widespread reach, “Send Me a Postcard” did not achieve notable recognition in the United States until Loog’s cover appeared on their 1995 album, Meltdown House. It gained further prominence with its inclusion in Ladytron’s 2003 compilation, *Softcore Jukebox*. In 2014, the song enjoyed a revival with a 7″ single release for Record Store Day, bringing it back into the spotlight for both old fans and new listeners.

Adding to its illustrious legacy, Bob Mould covered the track for his 2019 album *Sunshine Rock*, showcasing the song’s enduring influence. The song also found a place in popular culture with its inclusion in the soundtrack of the television series *Hanna*, featured in the first season’s episode titled “Friend,” which aired on March 29, 2019. This placement introduced the song to a contemporary audience, reinforcing its status as a classic with lasting appeal.

Lyrics

Before loneliness will break my heart
Send me a postcard darling
How can I make you understand?
I wanna be a woman
Here!
Yeah, I here I’m waiting for a little sign
Waiting ’til the end of time
Send me a postcard darling
Send me a poscard now
Send me a postcard darling
Send me a postcard now
I can’t take the lonely night
I need someone I can turn to
Look out the day I see a little sign
I want to know if you’re all mine
Naaah
Naah, please don’t let me down
Ain’t no lover like me in town
Send me a postcard darling
Send me a poscard now
Send me a postcard darling
Send me a postcard now
Before loneliness will break my heart
Send me a postcard darling
How can I make you understand?
I wanna be a woman
Here!
I here I’m waiting for a little sign
Waiting ’til the end of time
Send me a postcard darling
Send me a poscard now
Send me a postcard darling
Send me a postcard now
